Atlas Coal Mine

Atlas Coal Mine is a small site, but you can easily spend the day there if you take several guided tours. If you visit the site by yourself, you can tour it in less than an hour, but I think it will leave you unsatisfied because many parts are only accessible when visited with a guide.

My family rode the train. I was expecting an extraordinary experience aboard an old train, in a site with an unusual decor. I must admit that I was a little disappointed. The visit is short-lived, so perfect for young children like me; I was able to sit during the 30 minutes of the experiment. But it is imperative to mention that it brews more than I expected. When the train starts or stops, there is often a big “bang” followed by a big blow that shakes our whole body. We were a little disappointed with the experience in general, and the stories told by the guide could have been more lively.

During my afternoon rest, my parents took the opportunity to take a guided tour of the tunnel. They came back really satisfied. They walked up the large wooden structure that houses the belt to bring coal to the ground, crossed the tunnel dug into the mountain with their scout’s helmet, and descended all the steps from the top of the mountain. Their guide, Amelia, did a great job in telling her stories with a touch of humour.

In short, it was a nice visit. We learned a lot about the mining world, the economic engines that once replaced the oil sands of today. Atlas Coal Mine is definitely a place to discover!

Message From My Parents

This is a beautiful interpretation centre, but not very suitable for young children. I would say that under 8-9 years, they will not really understand. We loved our tour of the tunnel and our guide, Amelia, was just brilliant. She walked slowly so that the whole group could follow; when she gave information about safety and how to act, everything was very clear and well explained; and when she told her stories, we really believed her. It is really thanks to her that we loved our experience. I thought the tour prices to be a little expensive.
