Parc national Elk Island
What could be more unusual than driving through a herd of wild bison? This is what Elk Island National Park, near the city of Edmonton, offers. In your car, drive on an asphalt loop road where you will see dozens and dozens of bison, including several young ones. In the heart of the wilderness, expect to regularly stop your vehicle in order to let these behemoths pass as they block the road.
Many hiking trails are on hand in the park. It is possible to choose your route by determining the distance to walk, the points of interest to see or the level of difficulty. In winter, trade your sneakers for snowshoes.
The park has a large lake where you can paddle board, kayak or canoe, all of which are available for rent. In winter, the thick ice welcomes skaters.
The site also hosts a national campsite with basic amenities. Equipped tents or oTENTik accommodation are available for rent for campers looking for more comfort.

Your children will be amazed (or frightened) to see these big beasts up close with a more or less pretty appearance, but without malice. This activity requires little preparation, as you stay in your car, the kids in their car seats, and can easily eat your snack indoors or at one of the many picnic tables around the lake. If your sporty side is itching to get moving, many activities for the whole family are easily practised, whether you have the equipment or not. I have been here three times in the past two years, and each time it’s a discovery!
