Edmonton’s 5 Favourite Family Activities

Edmonton Valley Zoo

On my first visit to the Edmonton Zoo, located near downtown, I was surprised by the variety of animals and the well-appointed site. Over the last years, the site has undergone a real transformation: several new buildings have been built to accommodate other species and better serve visitors. The low cost of admission is really worth it: $11.25 for adults; $7.50—$9.50 for children; and free for children under 2 years of age.

Art Gallery of Alberta

This is the first place I set foot in when I moved to Alberta. I was immensely surprised by the quality of the exhibits presented as well as by the originality of the ultra-modern building. As it is a small museum, it is easy to see around the large spiral staircase, at the centre of its structure, which is worth the detour in itself! The child-only room is always a popular stop for children.

Fort Edmonton Park

What a wonderful site! I am not passionate about historic sites, but there is a whole world to discover at Fort Edmonton. Some of the most original buildings were first located near the Saskatchewan River and moved to the current site to preserve their heritage and to make the site into an interpretation centre.

Telus World Science

We can say that there is something for everyone in this museum, for both adults and children. You can find information on the solar system, animals, cloud formation, mixology and sex science! The place also has an observatory and an IMAX cinema where the subjects are well chosen.

West Edmonton Mall

Let’s face it, the West Edmonton Mall (WEM) remains a must for all ages, especially during rainy days or during the cold of Alberta’s winter. Ice rink, mini golf alleys, bowling, roller coasters, water slides and 900 stores rub shoulders in this 500 000m2 mall. Believe it or not, the WEM is Alberta’s most visited tourist attraction, with 22 million visitors a year. I think it’s worth it, but don’t forget your wallet at home!
